Day one: Pick up and depart to Virunga national park
Upon landing at Kigali international airport, our company driver-guide will meet and brief you about the 5 days gorilla trekking experience in the Democratic Republic of Congo while putting emphasis on the itinerary and responding to your inquiries.
Thereafter, you will enjoy a glass of juice, before setting off for Virunga national park, situated within the Virunga chain of mountains that sprawls through three countries, namely; Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. You will have an en-route stopover at Lake Kivu for lunch and a short boat cruise before proceeding to your lodge in Virunga national park for a delicious dinner meal and peaceful night.
Day Two: Gorilla trekking in Virunga national park and a visit to the tea estates
It’s a new day again when you are to reunite with your closest relatives, the mountain gorillas roaming in the wilderness. After a very heavy delicious cup of coffee, go for briefing at the park’s headquarters starting at 8:00am local time. When the park rangers verify your tracking permits, allocate you to different gorilla families and then escort you to different areas of the park in search of these gentle apes.
Depending on the direction the gentle apes have taken and your pace, the exercise can last for about 1-7 hours, with a chances to watch the silverbacks pose for photos, the adolescents’ climb trees, and the mothers nurse their young ones.
After that, return to the lodge for lunch, followed by a visit to the tea plantations where you will spend roughly 2-3 hours, interacting with the farmers, getting tips of tea growing and tasting the Congolese tea. Drive back to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay after the tea plantation experience.
Day Three: Transfer to nature walks and transfer to Kahuzi-Biega National Park
Wake up sober and have two hours of physical exercise after breakfast, with the guide walking with you in the outskirts of this beautiful park, as you watch the birds fly from one tree to another, take photos, spot abundant flora, butterflies and so much more.
After this, return to the lodge for refreshment and then checkout for a 4-5 hours’ drive to Kahuzi-Biega national park where you will encounter the eastern lowland gorillas. You will have an enroute stopover for lunch and then proceed with the drive that leaves you admiring the amazing vegetation and rolling hills in the countryside. Upon arriving at the lodge in Bukavu town, check-in and wait for dinner followed by a nap.
Day Four: Lowland gorilla trekking in Kahuzi-Biega National Park
You will welcome this day with a hot cup of coffee, followed by 1-6 hours of nothing but tracking the eastern lowland gorillas who are enjoying their rest, games or meals in the gigantic territory.
The park ranger will verify your trekking documents during the briefing session, explain the dos and don’ts, and allocate each member to a gorilla group of their choice. As compared to the Mountain gorillas, the eastern lowland gorilla species have bigger body sizes and are more in number.
When you meet these apes, take as many photos as you can as well as asking different questions before driving back to Bukavu town for relaxation or an optional waterfalls tour or cultural encounter.
Day five: Departure from Kahuzi-Biega national park and travel to Kigali for a city tour
Wakeup to a beautiful warm sunlight and enjoy a relaxed breakfast prepared by an experienced chef. After checkout of the lodge and embark on a 5-6 hours’ drive to Kigali international airport.
Upon arrival, take an optional tour at the Rwanda memorial genocide site for some lectures on the 1994 conflict between the Hutu and Tutsi, lunch and visit to the local markets if time allows, before transferring to the airport.
