This 3-days lowland gorilla trekking safari in the Kahuzi-Biega national park is a lifetime opportunity that gives you strong memories of the appearance and vocalization of the apes. You will track the giant lowland gorillas, enjoy the cold breeze rising from the slopes of Mount Kahuzi and Mount Biega, visit Kibati waterfalls and enjoy the beautiful sceneries.
Lowland gorillas have relatively bigger body size and in larger numbers as compared to their counterparts, the mountain gorillas and the western riverine gorillas. The trip starts and ends at Kigali international airport.
Day 1: Pick up and transfer to Kahuzi-Biega national park
From the word go, our company representative will be set, receiving you with a strong smile at the airport and then going ahead to brief you on all the different exciting moments of the trip.
Thereafter, he will hit the road on a 5-6 hours’ journey, with an en-route stopover at Lake Kivu for lunch and a brief boat ride before crossing the beautiful Cyangugu border, where you will stop for document verification and visa.
This drive is very smooth and exciting, with lots of amazing sceneries to watch and natives to smile at. Arrival will be in the evening as you check into your lodge for dinner and a nap.
Day 2: Lowland gorilla tracking and visiting Kibati waterfalls
After sipping off the last dot of tea in your cup, head to the park’s headquarters for a pre-trek session with some of the highly knowledgeable park rangers who will explain to you the dos and don’ts while with these amazing creatures, verify your tracking documents and allocate you to a gorilla family to track.
After the briefing that commences at 8:00 am, the hiking starts with the park rangers and security guards taking charge for approximately 1-7 hours, plus one hour for you to closely study the creatures’ unique behaviors, ask questions and take as many photos as you can.
Thereafter, you will return to the lodge for some refreshment, followed by a mouthwatering lunch before driving to Kibati waterfalls for amazing views, relaxation and photography. Afterwards, our driver-guide will hit the road to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Departure – through Nyanza museum and Butare city.
Early in the morning, you will have a tasty cup of coffee before checking out of the lodge for a 4-5 hours’ drive to Kigali international airport or to your place of residence, with an en-route stopover at the Nyanza museum for some historical insights into the Rwanda culture and political structure.
You will have a delicious enroute lunch in Butare town and then proceed with the drive to the airport for a flight to your next destination.
